With the Federal Election only a few days away, I made a last minute decision to get a package from the Government to have my class participate in Student Vote 2015. I was pleasantly surprised at how organized their resource package is, and how I would be able to use it for inquiry with my Grade 5s for Government and Citizenship well after the election has passed.
Whether or not you have ordered a package to participate, I highly recommend checking out the Student Vote 2015 website to utilize their CIVIX videos and Powerpoints to help guide inquiry for the Grade 5 social studies unit.

Here is the first video we are going to watch and generate questions about to help guide our mini inquiry this week, as well as post questions on our Wonder Wall:

I plan to use some of the lesson plans in the Student Vote Elementary Resource Guide, available on http://studentvote.ca/teaching-resources/ as well after the election, to help students gather and organize more information before I have them do a larger inquiry and create their own political parties in our classroom. More to come on that soon!
One last thing - if you are interested in having students generate questions or interpret and analyze what the individual federal candidates have to say, please check out Pollenize Canada at https://pollenize.org/canada - this site provides student-friendly summaries of the platforms for each of the political parties. Good for adults and students alike!
